Fun with stuff, or, lists are lame

June 26, 2007 at 4:52 pm  |  family, sports, technology, books/reading

I’ve been able to play with some new stuff lately, and I thought I might share.

  1. A Baby - She was ‘playful’ last night.  I don’t think she likes the heat.  We may need to move into the basement till Friday, or I guess we could turn on the central air. 1stDadDay.jpg
  2. Wize.com -  A page that lets you compare products.  It’s kinda neat.  I only wish it had better ways compare things (i.e. TV screen size and resolution).
  3. Google Reader - A pretty cool way to view RSS feeds.  You can even share what you find interesting (here’s mine, send me yours if you like).  Here’s a video on how to use it (or not… that’s just too many feeds).   Kinda wish it had a search… which is weird since this is a google thing.
  4. AutoHotKey - Used this at work today to cut out hours of tedious data entry.  It can learn your keystroke and mouse clicks and turn that into a script (kinda like the macro builder in excel).  Going to try and see what else you can do with this but it looks pretty powerful.
  5. GoodReads - Many of you probably got spamed from all the people joining this.  I haven’t given it a try but it looks like everyone else has.  I’ll add what I’m reading.  Got this from Dan.
  6. Jeff’s old golf clubs - I went golfing for father’s day (my first my dad’s 27th).  It was fun, now I need to move the clubs into my trunk so I can occasionally hit the driving range.

On an interesting aside, I have found that I need beer.  This has nothing to do with the alcohol but everything to do with the empty calories.  When the scientist was pregnant I lost 5 pounds (like 3.7% of my normal body weight) just because I gave up (read limited) my intake of beer.  So if you see me without a beer please think of my health and give me one.

 A week in review

June 3, 2007 at 12:02 pm  |  home, sports, photos

This last week was slightly eventful. I went back to work, leaving the Scientist home with someone who does not know how to talk. At least she is cute. Last weekend I somehow got myself out of the house a ran the Redhook 5K. Jeff did not come because he was tired.

On Thursday, three eventful things happened. First off (around 6:45am), delivery guys showed up to delivery our new washer and dryer. They take up less room, use less energy and make our clothing feel nicer. At 9:30 was Addie’s first doctor’s visit. She is in perfect health and weighed in at 8 lbs 4 ounces. The third eventful thing was me developing some crappy stomach bug, which kept me out of work (for most of the Thursday… thanks Jeff). I have since given this illness to Addie who has been gasy and cranky, and given us little sleep.

Finally, baby feet are very small (mine are size 9).

P.S. Jeff, I hope you end up getting a job around so that I get another shot of dragging you out to the Redhook Race. :)
P.P.S. Addie says, “Hrrrr…mphth.”

 A hockey video

If you are bored watch a couple of videos of us playing hockey.  I have yellow socks.

 An Awesome Video

February 28, 2007 at 10:00 am  |  comics/humor, video, sports

I could say that going over to London gave me more of an appreciation for Soccer, but that’s not really true.  I may end up watching it more this summer… maybe even go to a game.  The Revs do play the galaxy in August…

Anyway, please watch this click and be amused.  It’s pretty spectacular.

 Eventful?

February 15, 2007 at 10:57 am  |  sports, politics

In case you are wondering about the decrease in my posting, here are my reasons/excuses:

  1. I haven’t felt like posting about politics.  While more things seem to be happening, not much more seems to be getting done.  Mostly because the Republicans are doing what they accused the Democrats of doing. Remember this? While, I’m not tired of following politics I am more annoyed than angry, because now there is a chance to move back to where we were before Bushie.
  2. I usually post at work.  I don’t often turn on my computer when I’m at home (this probably seems like an odd statement to those who never turn yours off), and lately I have found myself extremely busy at work.  Now I like being busy because it makes the day go by faster and makes it feel like I’m getting things done.  Though, every time I invest any of myself into this place I get burned.  It’s like a bad relationship, you just keep on working to make her (it?) change but deep down you know she (it?) never will.
  3. I’ve been trying to keep myself busy not thinking how long it was til we left for London.  This is now only two days away so I can post!
  4. I’ve been watching more hockey.  The bruins have stopped losing recently and, hopefully, they will keep it up. There has been the Bean Pot (BC should have won) and UNH has been on TV quite a bit.  We also went to see a Monarch’s game last Saturday with Toby, his wife-to-be :), and Jared, which was really fun even if we didn’t end up having car bombs, get a Mr. Potato Head, or win french fries.
  5. Been trying to wrap my head around the arguments one of the guys I work with has been trying to make.  I personally don’t feel that ‘instilling virtue’ is one of the roles of government, or that the scientific method destroys free will (or what that has to do with morality).  I’m trying to understand his ideas because it seems to be what a lot of people believe but I’m failing.
  6. Generally being lazy.

Saturday was pretty fun in general.  We went skating on the pond in the morning, then went over to my folks’ place.  Toby, Lindsey and Jared met us over there, which was cool (it made it feel more like home, which is weird).  My mom even called to say what a good time she had.  We then drove down to Manch and had dinner at Strangebrew ($2 dollars for most everything they had on tap, except the beers we ordered which were $3).  The food was pretty good and the beer selection was excellent… I haven’t had Leffe since I was in Korea.  The crowd at the game was pretty loud and excited (more so than at the Bruins games, but the Monarch are leading their division) and there were lots of quirky gimmicks, including a T-Shirt cannon.  Oh, and the company was good even if I could not hear what anyone was saying throughout the game.

Enough.  Peace out.

 Too much (misc.)

December 12, 2006 at 3:29 pm  |  family, home, games, sports

It looks like Boby is coming to town!  Yeah!  And just in time to celebrate half way (20 weeks to go)!  The Scientist wants me to throw a party but I don’t really know how to do that.  So instead we’ll get some pizza, like we do most Fridays, and then have some virgin mixed drinks someplace (probably at home).

I’ve finished up my class this semester and now I have a lot more free time in the evenings.  I’m going to layout the potential built-in bookcase this week sometime…

I scored a goal last night.  It was a good one.  Most of the goals I’ve scored since I’ve started playing hockey have been less than pretty.  There have been a few wide open nets, a few hacks, a couple of ricochets, some tricklers and one that I really don’t know how got it… the goal claimed it went through the side of the net.  Anyway, this goal was not like that.  It started with a bad pass that I picked off at the blue line, I then stepped around the pass’s intended recipient, between two D and then put the puck in the net high stick side.  I felt like I actually earned the goal and didn’t just get lucky.  It’s a nice feeling.  Oh, and we won the game 4-3.  Which was also nice.
Still no Wii. Though I think Sunday maybe the day I get up really early and stand (sit) in line.  This thing tells me when stores are expecting shipments of Wiis, which is nice because the people who work at the stores tend to be clueless.

Lastly, I have been drinking too much coffee lately.  Not because I tired and need a pick-me-up, but because it is fucking cold at my work.  Any job I get better heat the place to something higher than 66 degrees.

 Jackson’s Landing

November 12, 2006 at 5:00 pm  |  sports, photos

I’ve never been able to find a online list of ice times for Jackson Landing in Durham, so I went there in my car and took a pictures of the 2006-2007 schedule. Blame Motorola for the poor picture quality.

Don’t blame me if the times are wrong. I’m just doing this out of the kindness of my heart (and to give me some place I can find the times).

 It’s 60 minutes long not 50 minutes!

November 3, 2006 at 10:19 am  |  sports, rant

Last night’s Bruins game was fucking awful.  Okay, I take that back.  The first 50 minutes were fantastic.  The B’s dominated the Saber (who have yet to mark up their loss column this year) for the first 2 and a half periods; notching 4 goals and only giving up one.  But then they fell into the prevent defense (dump and chase, I guess).  They needed to skate and keep attacking!  But they didn’t and the Sabers score 3 goals and ended up winning in the shoot out.  WTF.  It looked like the Bruins just stopped; like they became another team!  I thought I was over the frustration from last night but the recap on the radio this morning flared it up again!  Damn it.
To sum it up the Saber fought back even with a huge deficit, they never gave up, and the Bruins were/are unable to play an entire game.  This is why the Sabers are in first place and the Bruins are second to last.  Sigh.

 Bragging

July 18, 2006 at 1:54 pm  |  sports

So I figure I should write about the game last night.  The score ended up being 5 to 5 and since Red is a really good team I’ll not complain about that.  The team was a bit different than normal with our goalie playing center and one of our centers playing goalie, and with Tizzom playing center for me and his roomie filling for a missing D.  I got to play as Heidi’s left winger, which was nice because she knows where to be and where I will be, and I like play wing better than center (mostly because then I can pressure forward a lot more, there’s nothing better than stealing the puck from someone and going unabated to the net… except perhaps that plus scoring.  Got to work on that.).

As for my own personal performance, I had three goals and no assists (though on our goalie’s goal I did help by stealing the puck, pulling it around back of the net and passing it out front).   The first goal was a sally of a backhander that I did not see go in because I had my back to the net.  For my second goal, I just camped out on the right posted and knocked the puck out of the air when Dave shot it on net.  Okay it was only like 1 or 2 inches off the ice and I almost missed far side, but I was in really good position.  As for my last goal, I don’t really know what happened except the puck can flying at my chest so I crosschecked it, stuff happened, then it rolled in on edge.  Slow like.

In general we did pretty well, though we got beat a couple of times on D.  Plus I was a heck of a lot more tired after last night than normal.  Must have something to do with there only being two lines and skating harder than normal (?).

 Millennium Mile 7

July 13, 2006 at 9:29 am  |  sports

Look at me! I look in better shape than the lady in front of me. Maybe because I only ran a 5:23… who knew a mile was so short? If I run the thing next year I’ll try and break 5.

Look at me!
