 Dumb

July 19, 2006 at 12:37 pm  |  food/drink, politics, rant

So as I was quickly clicking through CNN (trying to dodge tripe) I was drawn to this article on how U.S. policy and perception in regards to the Middle-east is dumb.  I’d agree with this and would add that our policy makers should learn more history.
Also, it looks like big Agro businesses will be able to inject toxic chemicals (and other things) into their food without warning labels (via the National Uniformity for Food Act).  This article shows how this could negatively impact the New Hampshire Maple Syrup business (i.e. people will be able to put other things into their syrup besides sap and still be able to call in New Hampshire Maple Syrup) and points out that our Reps voted for it and that Gregg is co-sponsoring it in the Senate.  From the article:

It [National Uniformity for Food Act] would overturn Proposition 65, a California law that requires producers to place warning labels on food that California officials believe could cause cancer or birth defects.

“That undermines consumer confidence in the food supply,” Pape said. “If food ought to have a warning, it ought to have a warning in New Hampshire as well as California.”

Benjamin Cohen, a senior staff attorney for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said the food industry hates Proposition 65 because it forces producers to reformulate food to avoid the warning label.

Isn’t reformulating food so they don’t contain chemicals that can cause birth defects and cancer a good thing?  Oh, and in case you are wondering some companies inject dioxins and PCBs into beef to make it look better/redder.

Woo.  Riding high on coffee!  Woo.  Maybe the second cup was not a good idea but I was thirsty for something warm and happened to be walking by a full coffee pot with an empty cup.  Only one thing could be done.

I’ve not really got much to say but I felt I need to post that I changed the little icon that appears next to the URL and on the tap (in Firefox).  It’s the lobster from Heidi’s page.  I probably wont keep it (as it is pretty difficult to tell what it is) but I don’t know what image to use!  I found this nice site that makes any image into a 16×16 pixel icon image.  So if Tizzom is reading he no longer has to display the bluehost icon.  Just replace the favicon.ico in the public_html directory and you’re good to go!  But if you have any ideas for images I can iconify send me a link and I’ll give it a shot!  (I wonder if I can post all the images and setup a poll so people can vote on them!  Not that it’d matter.  There are only two votes that would count, but polls are fun!  I could do a weekly poll!  After the icon one I’d do names for James and Jen’s new child.  Mwah haha hah ah, cough.)

 Bragging

So I figure I should write about the game last night.  The score ended up being 5 to 5 and since Red is a really good team I’ll not complain about that.  The team was a bit different than normal with our goalie playing center and one of our centers playing goalie, and with Tizzom playing center for me and his roomie filling for a missing D.  I got to play as Heidi’s left winger, which was nice because she knows where to be and where I will be, and I like play wing better than center (mostly because then I can pressure forward a lot more, there’s nothing better than stealing the puck from someone and going unabated to the net… except perhaps that plus scoring.  Got to work on that.).

As for my own personal performance, I had three goals and no assists (though on our goalie’s goal I did help by stealing the puck, pulling it around back of the net and passing it out front).   The first goal was a sally of a backhander that I did not see go in because I had my back to the net.  For my second goal, I just camped out on the right posted and knocked the puck out of the air when Dave shot it on net.  Okay it was only like 1 or 2 inches off the ice and I almost missed far side, but I was in really good position.  As for my last goal, I don’t really know what happened except the puck can flying at my chest so I crosschecked it, stuff happened, then it rolled in on edge.  Slow like.

In general we did pretty well, though we got beat a couple of times on D.  Plus I was a heck of a lot more tired after last night than normal.  Must have something to do with there only being two lines and skating harder than normal (?).

157! [Link] Why is Russia Gog? Also what the hell is a beast government and what does it have to do with the EU?

33 Beast Government:
The possibility of the EU reforming into a smaller group of core nations has updated this category.

I found this article on the topic of crazies particularly informing even though it is British and two years old.  Sorry, I just ran across this and need to post.  Maybe I’ll post about hockey later.

 Core2?

July 17, 2006 at 10:00 am  |  technology

I don’t often talk about this sort of thing, but the new Intel Core2 Dou processors are spicy.  They give increased performance (not surprising) but they also decrease power consumption by up to 30%.  Wow.  I’m sure that fact alone will sell Intel a butt-ton of procs.

Pounce!

First off, I’d like to say KP is crazy. Second off, I’d like to say that Mondays are not fun.

Third.

Heidi and I had an interesting but relaxing weekend.

  • Friday, we were approved for a mortgage, went out to Kelly’s to sit outside, then watched the Redsox game/were guitar heroes at the doubleJs.
  • Saturday, I volunteered* scanning photographs at one of the 20 or so member libraries left in the country while Heidi went to the beach. We went grocery shopping and then I messed around with the blog while Heidi worked her 3rd job.
  • Sunday, was relaxing. We hung out in the morning then went to Portsmouth to have beers on the water and wandering around. (It is cooler by the water) This is probably where we’d end up moving so we thought we might as well get to know the place better. Then we had dinner, followed by the bookstore. I read through a few chapters of ‘Apathy and other small victories‘. I had so say I was amused by it. It was the little things, like how the author described how to sign ’shit’ (why are all online ASL dictionaries censored?) and how the main character steals saltshakers. I’ve not finished it, though I might pick it up (or just read it at the book store as it’s not at the library) but I’d recommend at least the first 3 chapters.

Apathy

At some point during the weekend I read through Newsweek. Now I don’t really think of Newsweek as a hard-hitting investigative rag but I was amused by the choice of articles and their layout. The cover article was Green America, which focused on what individuals and companies were doing to help the environment (and, more importantly, save money). This was a feel good, a ‘we can do it’, an ‘ain’t the American Entrepreneurial Spirit great?’ article. This was followed by a brief article bashing the US for not having greenhouse gas regulations or offering incentives for conservations; things that would stop our dependency on foreign oil and make us safer (i.e. stop wasting money on a unwinable war and put some if, not all, of that 100+ Billion a year into developing our energy infrastructure). It was a pretty good article and not something I’d expect from a magazine that devotes 10 pages to some guy talking about classic rock. (They also sort of call Bush a hypocrite…)

*I can’t say that I’m really one for volunteering. I usually just don’t care but I think that this could be good for me, and not just to put on my resume. I really don’t know much about libraries having never really worked in one so any experience will be good, plus getting a job is all about knowing someone who knows someone. It seems pretty much impossible to get a job just by applying.

I’m not going to post anything.

A new David Hasselhoff video.  Ha.

Meerkat’s do not eat shit donuts!

July 14, 2006 at 11:50 am  |  rant

You can learn things from places besides Dunkin Donuts’ commercials.  But I usually throw a stick if I get something stuck in a tree… a hose also works.  Maybe Heidi should post about meerkats to clear up any confusing.

I’m going to enjoying go home today and not coming to work tomorrow.  Yeah!

 Funny Ad?

Who’d think a campaign ad would be funny?  But check out Lamont’s ad.  Jon Stewart is also funny.
